We Are Commanded to Be Rooted in Jesus (2)
As we enter into chapter 29, please note that these commands are being established right before the Israelites enter the promised land. They are so integral in the eyes of God that they take up two chapters in sequential order.
“And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work: it is a day of blowing the trumpets unto you. And ye shall offer a burnt offering for a sweet savour unto the LORD; one young bullock, one ram, and seven lambs of the first year without blemish:
“And their meat offering shall be of flour mingled with oil, three tenth deals for a bullock, and two tenth deals for a ram, and one tenth deal for one lamb, throughout the seven lambs: and one kid of the goats for a sin offering, to make an atonement for you:” (Numbers 29: 1-5, KJV).
I want to give some insight into the “blowing of the trumpets”, which has multiple meanings. Used for military actions, in celebrations, and calls to action. As signs of God’s presence, power, and control. And of the resurrection and the glorious return of Christ.
The Aroma of The Prayers of The Saints
Revelation chapters 8-10 speak of the seven angels who will blow the trumpets and the calamities and devastations that will result. If God is willing we will get there in study but please do your own self reflecting as I point out two portions of scripture that shows the gravity of these times. The beginning and the end of WOES. Note the descriptive ways in which the prayers of the righteous are described.
The beginning: “When He (the Lamb) broke open the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour [in awe of God’s impending judgment]. Then I saw seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. Another angel came and stood at the altar. He had a golden censer, and much incense was given to him, so that he might add it to the prayers of all the saints (God’s people) on the golden altar in front of the throne. And the smoke and fragrant aroma of the incense, with the prayers of the saints (God’s people), ascended before God from the angel’s hand” (Revelation 8: 1-4, AMP).
The Blowing of The Trumpets
And the end: “Then the angel whom I had seen standing on the sea and the land raised his right hand [to swear an oath] to heaven, and swore [an oath] by [the name of] Him who lives forever and ever, WHO CREATED HEAVEN AND THE THINGS IN IT, AND THE EARTH AND THE THINGS IN IT, AND THE SEA AND THE THINGS IN IT, that there will be delay no longer, but when it is time for the trumpet call of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God [that is, His hidden purpose and plan] is finished, as He announced the gospel to His servants the prophets” (Revelation 10: 5-7, AMP).
Before we go further, here is another reminder of why it was to be used in the seventh month. “And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies” (Numbers 10: 9, KJV).
The LORD has established this next verse. And is an indication of why we have strayed so far from Him in worship. Because we have not kept his covenant. That we were not to diminish ought of the daily and monthly worship. “Beside the burnt offering of the month, and his meat offering, and the daily burnt offering, and his meat offering, and their drink offerings, according unto their manner, for a sweet savour, a sacrifice made by fire unto the LORD” (Numbers 29: 6, KJV).
The Lamb, Ram, Bullock, and The Goat
In my last post, meaning was given for the symbolism of the meat, drink, flour, and oil offerings. The different animals that were sacrificed including the lamb, ram, bullock, and goats. The times that we were to worship with emphasis that no celebration or feast was to detract from the continual (or daily) burnt offerings. In this post we will confirm throughout His Word the importance of different types of worship and how it is established in verbosity.
“And ye shall have in the tenth day of this seventh month an holy convocation, and ye shall afflict your souls: ye shall not do any work therein: but ye shall offer a burnt offering unto the LORD for a sweet savour; one young bullock, one ram, and seven lambs of the first year; they shall be unto you without blemish:
“and their meat offering shall be of flour mingled with oil, three tenth deals to a bullock, and two tenth deals to one ram, a several tenth deal for one lamb throughout the seven lambs: one kid of the goats for a sin offering; beside the sin offering of atonement, and the continual burnt offering, and the meat offering of it, and their drink offerings” (Numbers 29: 7-11, KJV).
Fasting To Humble and Afflict Your Souls
To “afflict your souls” in the context presented here is to fast. As a way to humble ourselves in repentance, as we seek God’s will, being commanded to do no work at this time. The “sin offering” is considered a form of atonement. Specific to atoning for unintentional sins. Focusing on purification from the defilement of sin, as a way to reenter God’s presence. The atonement offering is a broader term that encompasses sin and guilt offerings. To make amends for wrongdoing and for restoration into His presence.
“And in the fifteenth day of the seventh month ye shall have a holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work, and ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days: and ye shall offer a burnt offering, a sacrifice by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD; thirteen bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year; they shall be without blemish:
“And their meat offering shall be of flour mingled with oil, three tenth deals unto every bullock of the thirteen bullocks, two tenth deals to each ram of the two rams, and a several tenth deal to each lamb of the fourteen lambs; and one kid of the goats for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, his meat offering, and his drink offering” (Numbers 29: 12-16, KJV).
Remain Faithful and Persistent. A Willing Sacrifice
This feast lasts for seven days with the bullocks being sacrificed, decreasing by one every day until only seven are sacrificed on the seventh day. But the rams and the lambs to be sacrificed remains consistent at two and fourteen respectively. I want you to remember the symbolism for each animal.
In the context of these scriptures the bullock may represent work, sacrifice, and strength. Diligent labor and service to others. But even more so, a commitment to remain faithful, persistent, and rooted in Jesus. Let it be confirmed three times.
1) “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run [their very best to win], but only one receives the prize? Run [your race] in such a way that you may seize the prize and make it yours! Now every athlete who [goes into training and] competes in the game is disciplined and exercises self-control in all things. They do it to win a crown that withers, but we [do it to receive] an imperishable [crown that cannot wither].
“Therefore I do not run without a definite goal; I do not flail around like one beating the air [just shadow boxing]. But [like a boxer] I strictly discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached [the gospel] to others, I myself will not somehow be disqualified [as unfit for service]” (1 Corinthians 9: 24-27, AMP).
Let Go of Distractions
2) “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who by faith have testified to the truth of God’s absolute faithfulness], stripping off every unnecessary weight and the sin which so easily and cleverly entangles us, let us run with endurance and active persistence the race that is set before us,
“[looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the one who brings our faith to maturity], who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God [revealing His deity, His authority, and the completion of His work]. Just consider and meditate on Him who endured from sinners such bitter hostility against Himself [consider it all in comparison with your trials], so that you will not grow weary and lose heart” (Hebrews 12: 1-3, AMP).
And 3) “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again” (Luke 6: 38, KJV).
The ram symbolizes power, leadership, strength, and sacrifice. Along with wisdom and discernment. The numbers for his sacrifice stayed consistent throughout the seven day feast. Just as the lamb that represents purity, innocence, meekness, and gentleness. A symbol for our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ, Himself.
Let Us Work Out Our Own Salvation with Fear and Trembling
As we close, I want to remind you that we must work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. It is up to us to replenish and store up the oil in our vessels. Just as in the parable of the ten virgins. Five were wise and five were foolish. “They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps” (Matthew 25: 3-4, KJV).
When the foolish asked the wise for some of their oil, they were essentially told to go to the false prophets and others who sell lies to them and to continue to be misdirected. To be misguided, careless, and ill-advised. Becoming ineffective as they were being distracted. Confirmed three times:
1) “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not” (Matthew 25: 41-43, KJV).
Don’t Be Deceived. God Will Not Be Mocked
2) “But while they were going away to buy oil, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut and locked. Later the others also came, and said, ‘LORD , LORD, open [the door] for us.’ But He replied, I assure you and most solemnly say to you, I do not know you [we have no relationship]” Matthew 25: 10-12, AMP).
And 3) “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘LORD, LORD,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day [when I judge them], ‘LORD, LORD, have we not prophesied in Your name, and driven out demons in Your name, and done many miracles in Your name?’ And I will declare to them publicly, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME [you are banished from My presence], YOU WHO ACT WICKEDLY [disregarding My commands]” (Matthew 7: 21-23, AMP).
Again, let me stress the verbiage of the final directives to this chapter. “These things ye shall do unto the LORD in your set feasts, BESIDE your vows, and your freewill offerings, for your burnt offerings, and for your meat offerings, and for your drink offerings, and for your peace offerings. And Moses told the children of Israel according to all that the LORD commanded Moses” (Numbers 29: 39-40, KJV).
