There Are Levels to This
The last chapter that we studied was giving the Israelites ways to purify themselves from the unclean. God wanted to take them all, specifically Moses and Aaron, to a higher level.
But with these come requirements. Of these, two are faith and obedience. Now I am asking the LORD to open some things up for me. What I will tell you is that now when I read the word, I meditate more on what is written. Reading a chapter more than once. Walking away but allowing it to ruminate in my mind. Asking God to give deeper meaning and insight.
In the Bible there is one verse written on Miriam’s death. “Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there” (Numbers 20: 1, KJV).
Remember, chapter 19 was about new beginnings. God was attempting to bring all the Israelites, including Moses and Aaron, into a deeper level of understanding His character, mercy, and His glory. As I mentioned in a previous post, the Israelites did not lift a finger, with the exception of the instructions of preparation given of God. The LORD wanted to manifest that He is their reward as He said to the Levites.
Evil Communication Corrupts Good Manners
Keep in mind that Moses walked in perfect obedience up to this point. And had he continued, God was willing to elevate him in honor and sanctification. But I need you to pay attention to how the Israelites rejected God’s gift. A chance to start over. To take part in His omnipotence.
The sanctification process is so powerfully important because of our interactions with man and sin. Moses was perfect in the building of the tabernacle and the Ark of The Covenant. Down to the most minute detail. Holiness and sanctification are continued processes for a reason.
“And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD! And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?” (Numbers 20: 2-4, KJV).
Let me repeat, God was giving them a chance at repentance. Even after He past judgment upon the people. They knew why they were in the wilderness, and in their brokenness they were asking why they weren’t swallowed alive and burned and killed by the plagues as their brothers had been. Even those that went down alive into Sheol. All without absolution.
As The Dog Returns to His Vomit
“And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink. And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them” (Numbers 20: 5-6, KJV).
Can I tell you something? The devil and his children will attempt to gaslight you as you separate yourselves from them. But let me confirm why it is wise to do so. And I want you to also notice that Moses almost always receives an answer from the LORD after he separates himself from the people. And even more importantly, the manifestation of the presence of the LORD.
1) “For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world by [personal] knowledge of our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, their last condition has become worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them not to have [personally] known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to have turned back from the holy commandment [verbally] handed on to them. The thing spoken of in the true proverb has happened to them, THE DOG RETURNS TO HIS OWN VOMIT,’ and, ‘A sow is washed only to wallow [again] in the mire” (2 Peter 2: 20-22, AMP).
Touch Not the Unclean Thing
And 2) “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? and what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? and what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the LORD, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you” (2 Corinthians 6: 14-17, KJV).
Here is the confirmation of why God taught them to purify themselves. The importance of sanctification, obedience, and faith. And why anger can be detrimental in our walk with God.
“And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Take the rod; and you and your brother assemble the congregation and speak to the rock in front of them, (Notice that He did not tell Moses to speak to the people.) so that it will pour out its water. In this way you shall bring water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their livestock drink [fresh water]’. So Moses took the rod from before the LORD, just as He commanded him; and Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly before the rock. Moses said to them, ‘Listen now, you rebels; must we bring you water out of this rock?’” (Numbers 20: 7-10, KJV).
Disobedience is As the Sin of Witchcraft
Let me reflect for a moment. Many times, it is in our nature to have the last word, to attempt to explain or justify ourselves, or to show that “I am right and you are wrong”. Even looking for approval or to provoke. When we do this, it never proves anything to a person or people that has already made their minds up to think the worst. Making the situation worse. Leading to many of us saying or doing things that we will regret. Speaking death into our lives and others.
Because in the end, it is only God’s opinion that matters. This is why we should trust Him and not seek to please man because it is unceasing. To those who are never satisfied. An unstable, cadaverous, unearthly process. This is why it is written: “Do not give that which is holy to the dogs, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, for they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces” (Matthew 7: 6, AMP).
“Then Moses raised his hand [in anger] and with his rod he struck the rock twice [instead of speaking to the rock as the LORD had commanded]. And the water poured out abundantly, and the congregation and their livestock drank [fresh water]” (Numbers 20: 11, AMP).
Trust in The LORD at All Times
I want to remind you that in a recent post I talked about how sin can set you back by leaps and bounds. The Israelites had already been confined to wander in the wilderness for forty years. “But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, ‘Because you have not believed (trusted) Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, you therefore shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them’. These are the waters of Meribah (contention, strife), where the sons of Israel contended with the LORD, and He showed Himself holy among them” (Numbers 20: 12-13, AMP).
Moses went from having to speak to the rock by not only striking it but having to do so twice. The sin of disobedience was also immediately made manifest when they were not allowed to pass through the land of Edom. So instead of going through they had to go around and as we close, I want to give you another revelation.
“And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us: how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers: And when we cried out unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:
The Lasting Effect of Sin and Its Curse
“Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king’s high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed by thy borders. And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.
“And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only without doing any thing else, go through on my feet. And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand” (Numbers 20: 14-20, KJV).
I still believe that nothing is happenstance with God. “And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the coast of the land of Edom, saying, Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against My word at the water of Meribah. Take Aaron and Eleazer his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor: And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazer his son; and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.
“And Moses did as the LORD commanded: and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation. And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazer his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazer came down from the mount” (Numbers 20: 23-28, KJV).
Are You in Right-Standing While There is Still Time
Moses had to bury his brother. I want to point out at least two things. Moses did not intercede for Aaron, nor did Aaron for himself. At least it wasn’t mentioned here. God told them of His judgment and why. But what stands out to me is that Moses was told to “strip Aaron of his garments”. Which speaks loud and clear as to God’s mood in that moment.
It was as if even the congregation was waiting in anticipation, to see if Aaron would return with them. Just as when a loved one passes, many hold out hope that God will have more mercy and give us more time together. But it was not so for Aaron. “And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel” (Numbers 20: 29, KJV).
